Performance WE: Rotterdam kids take over Maaspodium
The performance WE (8+) will play in Maaspodium, Rotterdam from August 24th to September 1st, 2024. The performance is a theatrical route through the Maaspodium and explores the power of change. A group of Rotterdam children called the Maas Creators take over the theater and are at the helm of a professional performance. They work in all departments, from performer to director, from costumes to technology.

Everything in life moves and changes. The earth rotates. The sun turns red. The sand gets blown away. A mother moves. A family flees. We are all different and that is our superpower.
But what if you find change scary? If you want everything to stay as it is? Or what if you are not allowed to change?
WE is a theatrical adventure through the theater. Together with the audience, the makers investigate the power and tensions of large and small changes and the audience moves from space to space. Everything in the building is a stage for spoken word, film, dance and live music. As an audience you help build a physical work of art that continues to change. Because one thing is certain: the power to change something - big or small - is a superpower within all of us.
MAAS CREATORS
For the past two years, there has been a Maas Creators camp every school holiday. Children aged 8 to 12 made art for a week and even stayed the night at Maas in the grand theater hall. This summer, the Maas Creators, together with ten professional artists, create a theatrical route for an adventurous audience. The voice of the child (the Maas Creator) is leading in every step of the process. From performer to director, from costume maker to marketer: the children penetrate the fiber of the theater.

Normally, they have to do what adults say at school and at home, but this time, we follow the children and let go of our set rules and structures. There is so much wisdom in these young people who are often oppressed in the systems we have created. In WE we stimulate their artistry and agency by putting their voice at the center of every step of the process. Whether it concerns costumes, theater lighting or direction: their voices guided by our professional artists truly create something unique: a performance where both their families and Maas fans audience can enjoy unfiltered creativity and artistic vision in a professional setting."
