A Shadow Can See is the audiovisual music theater performance by Rotterdam artist Gavin-Viano. For this project, he collaborates with video artist Wes Broersen, animator Viktor Adriaansen, music producers Donna Lugassy, Sennes, and the percussion group Ritmo Entertainment.
The performance revolves around the shadow as the main character, advocating for an independent life. Abstract reflections of the stage and the artist are used to bring this entity to life.
With the help of a Motion Capture Suit, Gavin-Viano's shadow takes on a physical form through digitalization. This, combined with the rhythmic heartbeat created live by the percussionists, where sound analysis plays a driving role both musically and visually.
Duration of the performance: 60 minutes.

About the maker
Gavin-Viano (Frascati Theater & Het Nationale Theater) graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts during the summer of 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, he was awarded the DNA Next Encouragement Prize, worth €25,000. In 2023, his performance Bloodscent was nominated for the BNG Bank Theater Prize, and he received the Henri Winkelman Award, valued at €10,000.
Before starting his studies in Maastricht, he successfully completed programs at The New York Film Academy and CODARTS Rotterdam Dance Academy.
