Family Honour
Family Honour is a short performance by London-based choreographer Kwame Asafo-Adjei and his company Spoken Movement, who come to Maaspodium in Rotterdam especially for this evening. We are honoured and excited! The performance is part of a full evening program with talkshow NOW TALKS, film and more context program.
Family Honour examines the eponymous concept through the eyes of a young girl trapped in moral codes mandated by her immediate environment, confronting her past ‘sin’ against tradition. Abandoned by her father, she seeks solace from memories resembling her father.
Inspired by an intense discussion held in choreographer Kwame Asafo-Adjei's own family, the performance draws the audience into a world where hip hop isn’t just rubbing shoulders with theatre, but is theatre. How far would you have to go to maintain the family’s honour? And is it truly honourable or just another traditional taboo?

NOW TALKS
Climate change, gender identity, sexual harassment, racism, group pressure, cultural appropriation, mental health; during the interactive talkshow NOW TALKS we discuss the issues of today: what needs to be discussed right now? Prior to the performance Family Honour, we present the third edition of NOW TALKS: who can be family? To what degree can you shape your own life and how much is directed by family traditions? Do you stick to your blood relatives or can you also create a new family?
Our enthusiastic Maas youth panel and the youngsters of SPACE010 come up with and present the evening, and invite the audience to try a new perspective. Always in the form of conversations with experts, often contextualized with food and art. A safe space where sensitive subjects and sensitive people get the chance to express themselves. Live from the Maaspodium in Rotterdam, but also to be followed online for free.

Spoken Movement is a London-based company led by Asafo Adjei and formed by dancers who have taken the elements of street dance and abstract movement to create their own movement. Asafo-Adjei: "Using different genres of music, I look to push boundaries by undertaking concepts, issues and day to day life to create pieces of work. Running my own company has given me a sense of leadership, direction and drive to reach my goals in life. This pushes me to motivate who ever I work with including kids and the youth in the community, I always aspire to inspire those around me.
