Shifting Faces
Shifting Faces delves into social themes surrounding the manipulability of humans. The piece was devised for a live audience with each audience member encouraged to choose and wear a mask to enable a shared experience with the dancers. The piece raises questions about what 'normality' is and how identical we can be as humans in this society. The masks worn heighten the role of non-verbal communication as the body becomes the storyteller. Dealing with themes of transformation, social norms, power and ideals of beauty, the dancers explore questions such as "Why do we become so uncomfortable when we are face to face with those whose behaviour or appearance deviates from the normal?” (On Normalities and Other Deviations, Paul Verhaeghe). However, in a world of Botox, plastic surgery and ever-changing standards, how real is 'normal'?
Duration: 50 minutes.
