From here onwards
From here onwards is a collaborative project by Maas Theater and Dance (Rotterdam), What You See Festival (Utrecht), and Jonge Harten Festival (Groningen). Driven by a desire to actively address the shifting worldviews of younger generations, From here onwards invites three theater makers to experiment with new work for children and young people. Each of them explores in their own way how to claim the space given to them in the world.
Sue-Ann Bel focuses on her relationship with her body, Art Wutthinan Srisayam looks at his role within the family, and Guilliano Pinas explores his place and that of the ballroom community in society. Their stories, ranging from intimate to universal, touch on questions of identity: who am I, where do I belong, and how do I navigate the space I have?
Guilliano’s research can be seen at Jonge Harten Festival in Groningen on Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16. Art and Sue-Ann’s research will be shown at What You See Festival in Utrecht on Saturday, November 16.
All three works will be presented at the Maaspodium in Rotterdam on December 19, 20, and 21. Tickets for this event will be online soon.
Please note: there will be Dutch spoken in these works, so some knowledge of the Dutch language is necessary.
Pap (9+) by Art Wutthinan Srisayam
With Pap (9+), dancer, choreographer, and creator Art Wutthinan Srisayam sets up his stove on stage and explores what was instilled in him from a young age. By stirring, smelling, and grinding fresh herbs with a mortar, Art hopes that this solo performance will bring him closer to his late father. Who was he, and what of him remains? For this project, Art traveled to Thailand to meet his father’s family again after more than twenty years. There, he regained an important memory: how his father taught him to cook.
How can you cook and dance at the same time? What emotion is released by an ingredient or cooking technique? What does home smell like? Pap is a steamy performance about comfort food and family memories for everyone aged nine and up.
‘I wish I had frozen dishes from that time so I could take a bite each year. Time passes, and I can try to recreate his food, but it’s never the same. Food is connected to your roots, a sense of home. Your tongue always betrays where you come from. When I feel homesick, I cook. Food is very intimate.'
My period is our period (10+) by Sue-Ann Bel
Snuggle under a blanket in the new musical research project My period is our period (10+) by creator and performer Sue-Ann Bel. Together with Sue-Ann, you dive into the 'vulvaverse.' Why do we talk so little about the menstrual cycle, even though almost half of the people on this earth bleed every month? Or feel sadness because they don’t. With this project, Sue-Ann stays close to herself and explores what’s happening in her body. She sings a lullaby to her womb and dances through the four seasons of her cycle. If we open our legs and really let things flow, can we create connection beyond the taboo?
My period is our period is a preliminary exploration for the performance Lekker Ongie, which Sue-Ann Bel will create in 2026 at Maas Theater and Dance for a young audience aged ten and up. In this research phase, Sue-Ann wants to explore how to make this subject discussable for young people. How do you create a safe space to share about this?
‘Maybe this story isn’t for a large audience, but in a small, safe tent, we can turn shame into an ode.’
ALTER EGO (16+) by Guilliano Pinas
ALTER EGO (16+) is a fiery performance by creator, choreographer, and founder of the Rotterdam vogue dance community (Ballroom), Kiki House of Angels’ Guilliano Pinas. With ALTER EGO, Guilliano brings a personal story about the struggles from his youth. How could he reconcile the masculine and feminine sides within himself? Through Ballroom, Guilliano learned to better understand these two dualities within him. They were allowed to exist in the same space and entered into a dialogue: Who are you? I am you. We are one. In ALTER EGO, Guilliano, along with two performers, shows this process through movement and language. A performance about self-acceptance and the love for Ballroom.
In 2015, Guilliano Pinas founded Kiki House of Angels, the first house outside the United States to achieve legendary status. He is also the European Father of the House of Basquiat. Guilliano became involved with Maas through the performance The Ozard of Wiz, where the story of director René Geerlings resonated with him: the struggle between the feminine and masculine sides, which he recognized from his own youth.
Work-in-progress
Maas Theater and Dance, What You See Festival, and Jonge Harten Festival found common ground in their curiosity for new perspectives, social justice, and diverse voices on stage. What is the perspective of a new generation of creators? And how do they arrive at that perspective? This calls for giving space to experimentation, risks, and unfinished work. The presentations by Art, Sue-Ann, and Guilliano are therefore not full performances, but works-in-progress after a short research period. It is precisely this exploration that From here onwards finds interesting and wants to present to the audience, inviting them to reflect on it together.
