Everything ordinary becomes extraordinary in VO-LU-ME. Theater makers Karlijn Hamer and Bram van Helden take the tiniest ones, from 1.5 to 3 years old, along with their (grand)parents, step by step, into their imagination. A first introduction to theater, where at the end, everyone can enjoy some playful time together in the cozy theater tent.
In their pockets, Bram and Karlijn find a small piece of fabric that grows bigger with every fold. It becomes so large that you can even disappear into it. With this piece of fabric, they fill the entire space—transforming it from flat to round, from empty to full. Sometimes you feel tiny, and other times, you feel huge. Afterward, when all the little hands are itching to play and the little feet are stomping, the children can join in and play on the floor. After all, playing together and marveling at the world is the most fun thing there is!
VO-LU-ME received four stars in de Volkskrant: "Toddler theater is not new, but these creators, including director Inez Derksen, give the genre a unique twist. It's also beautiful for adults to see how such simple means can spark the imagination." Maker Bram van Helden finds in very ordinary things a source of wonder about life. This connects well with the experience of toddlers and their parents. For Karlijn Hamer, toddlers are the dream audience: “They engage with their bodies, and everything has the potential to be lifted into theater by them.”
"This is real theater magic. Normally, my children have an attention span of 15 seconds, but here they were captivated the whole time!"
– Mark, father of Perre and Juula
"It seems so simple, but so much thought has gone into this. Hats off!"
– Maartje, mother of Rafke (2)
"The performance area in the center, with the children around it, works fantastically. It's fascinating how something so simple can keep 20 children quiet."
– Dorijn, mother of two children
